Okay, I have a 14k gold cross necklace that my boyfriend gave me. The gold is fading, why?

Its the strangest thing, two days ago, it started falling of. And now the color is fading. My boyfriend is in Mexico, he just left on Saturday, and we have never been this far apart before. I live in Texas, I just think its strange that this happened when he left…
And, It says on the back 14k, and Iv had it for about 3 months, and he has had it for about 2 years, he just gave it to me.

yeah i guess i should have done that but i went the hard way! i put the “fake” studs on, and within about an hour they got SOOOOOOO itchy!!! i think i rubbed them to blood! but i didnt take them out i just kept cleaning them with the solution and treating them like new piercings and now about a month later they stopped complaining. they didnt get swollen but red yeah it was kinda gross. now though theyre used to it.
maybe you should do it your way though, and see if in a year theyre completely okay with metal other than gold.
